About Bodies Exhibit NYC

Bodies the Exhibition or the Bodies Exhibit is a controversial exhibition showcasing preserved human bodies dissected to display bodily systems. It provides an intimate and informative view into the human body. Thus, anyone can know, learn and understand how our body works.

All of the anatomical specimens in Bodies The Exhibition are legally received. Those specimens are painstakingly prepared by medical university experts for the purpose of study and education. The end result is human specimens that can be examined without any deterioration due to normal decomposition.

The exhibition allows visitors to walk among bodies preserved through a process that fills their tissue spaces with a liquid silicone rubber. The bodies are then separated and posed in a manner best fit to displaying the complex workings of the skeletal, muscular, reproductive and other systems.

Bodies exhibit was first started in Tampa, Florida on August 20, 2005.

The Process for Preserving The Bodies at the Bodies Exhibit

The bodies are prevented from decay by a means of a rubberization process that was patented in the 1970s by anatomist Gunther von Hagens. The heart of the process is the replacement of water and fatty material in the cells of the body first by acetone, and then by plastics (such as silicone rubber, polyester or epoxy resin).

The process is as follows:

  • Anatomists fix a specimen with chemicals to temporarily halt the decaying process. They then dissect it to expose important structures.
  • All of water is removed from the specimen by replacing it with acetone.
  • The specimen is placed into liquid silicone within a vacuum chamber. Under vacuum, the acetone becomes a gas that is completely replaced by the polymer mixture.
  • Lastly, the silicone polymer is hardened. The end result is a dry, permanently preserved specimen containing no toxic chemicals. It returns the look of the original, but functions as if it were rubber.

Preparation time varies – a small organ may take only a week, while a full body specimen may take up to one year to prepare.
