About The New York Botanical Garden

The New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) is one of the leading botanical gardens in the United States. It was founded in 1891. It is situated in the Bronx borough of New York City.

It has one of the world’s best collections of plants. You can visit the world’s most important plant laboratories when you visit this botanical garden spread over 250-acres. It plays host to more than 800,000 visitors annually by offering exhibitions and flower shows all over the year.

You can travel around 50 gardens, 50-acres of native forest, and a Victorian-style glasshouse. Each garden is a work of living art, and has spectacular displays – many of which were created by famous architects and designers.

New York Botanical Garden has an eternal supply of beauty – it decorates itself in each season, and brings new kinds of blooms on a number of plants and trees.

 

What to See at The New York Botanical Garden

You can effortlessly spend a day admiring the still cascade waterfall, wetlands and a 50-acre tract of original, old-growth New York forest – never logged – containing oaks, American beeches, cherry, birch, tulip and white ash trees. Some of these trees are more than two centuries old!

The NY Botanical Garden’s tourist attractions include a 1890s vintage wrought iron framed, “crystal palace style” greenhouse by Lord & Burnham (now called Enid A. Haupt Conservatory), the Peggy Rockefeller Rose Garden, a rock garden, and a 37-acre conifer collection.

It also attract tourists with its wide-ranging research facilities as well as a propagation center, a 550,000-volume library, and an herbarium of more than seven million botanical samples dating back over three centuries.

At the heart of the Garden is 50 acres of old-growth forest, which enclosed all of New York City before the entrance of the European colonists in the 17th century. The forest is divided by the Bronx River, the single fresh water river in New York City, and includes a riverside valley and white water.

The botanical garden also has Children’s Adventure Garden. This interactive garden includes mazes, hands-on activities and other activities geared to children 2-12 years old. This garden is maintained mainly by children – kids love digging in the dirt in this garden. These activities are open at all times, except for when the garden is closed between November and March.

The New York Botanical Garden is open all year-round. The hours are:

• Closed on November 22 (Thanksgiving) and December 25 (Christmas)

It is very easy to reach the Bronx Zoo from anywhere in the city using public transport.

 

By Train / Subway

You can also take buses from Manhattan to The Bronx, and take the Bx 26 bus to the garden

Grounds Only

The grounds-only admission tickets can only be purchased on site at the garden. The rates are:

• Students (with valid ID): $5
• Children (2-12 years), $2
• Children under 2: Free

Insider Tip: The grounds admission is completely free on Wednesdays (all day) and on Saturdays (from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.)

The All Garden Pass includes admission to the grounds, plus admission to the Haupt Conservatory, Special Exhibitions, Children’s Adventure Garden, Rock Garden (April – October) and Tram Tour.
