It is relatively lesser known even to New Yorkers, and is therefore uncluttered by trash or crowds.

The beach spans more than 170 acres of sun and sand. Apart from the beach itself, there are 7 playgrounds for children, and adults can play volleyball or skate.

The Far Rockaway beach has NYC’s only surfing areas. The beach is also known for its striped bass and bluefish.

Little known fact: Although the Far Rockaway area is a part of New York City, it is actually located on the South Shore of Long Island.

The Far Rockaway beach is an awesome beach that stretches on and on – so you can swim, sunbathe, and snack to your hearts content.

It has a nice and long boardwalk, so you can just take a stroll and enjoy its beauty. You can also skate or enjoy playing volleyball.

When the surf’s up, you can get into your wet suits and ride the waves (beach area near 90th street is available for surfing). On calmer days, you can fish for the striped bass and bluefish.

You can also enjoy barbecuing on the beach – there are designated barbecue areas available.

There are a ton of food options – bars, pubs & delis – on the boardwalk as well as within walking distance of the beach. Beaches on the 95th, 102nd, 108th, 116th streets are especially interesting for foodies.

Free Yoga – beginner Hatha Yoga – is available on the beach (Beach 108th St) on Saturdays during Summer.

There is also a gay beach at Riis Park (Boardwalk & 149th St).

How to reach Far Rockaway Beach

Although Far Rockaway beach is secluded and far off, it is easily accessible by public transport.

Since it is lucked away on a peninsula, it does take some time to reach it (about 1.5 hours from midtown Manhattan), but it is very much worth it!

 

 

By Train / Subway

You can take the ‘A’ train to Far Rockaway, and transfer to the ‘S’ (shuttle) train at the Broad Channel station. It stops at 90th, 98th, 105th, and 116th street stops. You can get off of the train at any of these stops, and walk two blocks up to the boardwalk.

You can also take the ‘L’ train to Broadway Junction, transfer to the ‘A’ train to Far Rockaway, and transfer to the ‘S’ train at the Broad Channel station.

If you are coming from Brooklyn, you can take the ‘J’ or ‘Z’ trains to Broadway Junction, transfer to the ‘A’ train to Far Rockaway, and transfer to the ‘S’ train at the Broad Channel station.

By Bus

You can take the Q22 from the bus terminal on Archer Avenue. You can also take the Q113 or N33 buses.

You can also take the Q53 from Woodhaven to the Cross Bay Bridge. You would need to get off at the 96th St stop, and walk 2 blocks to the beach.

There is free parking on the side of Shorefront Pkwy on the diverse streets, as well as a parking lot between Beach 94th and 95th streets.
